Melancholia.

Filmmaker. Danish. Controversy. Nudist Communist parents… Lars von Trier.

I walked into a sold out theater Friday night, anticipating difficult emotions, aesthetic satisfaction, and the end of the world.

The movie’s title is both the name of the red planet heading straight for Earth and Sigmund Freud’s diagnosis of a mental state of depression. The film was rendered in a way that sealed and captured the audience within the first few seconds.

After the film, I stood outside and listened to all commentary of the audience as they filtered out of the theater.  I stood muted for words to describe what I had just viewed.

“Pretentious pointlessness. Fascinating.  Slow. Painfully depressing. Explanation required. Mesmerized by the imagery. Sublime.”

One thing is for sure Melancholia re-solidified Lars von Trier as an artist and filmmaker here to stay.
